Week 11 MVP: Tanoka Beard, Zalgiris Kaunas
A classic Euroleague big man takes center stage again as Tanoka Beard of Zalgiris Kaunas became the regular season Week 11 MVP by achieving the highest individual index rating of the competition despite his team's home loss to Fenerbahce Ulker. This marks the fifth time in his Euroleague career that Beard has earned weekly MVP honors. Beard scored 17 points on 7-of-11 two-pointers and grabbed 13 rebounds against Fenerbahce. He added 4 assists, 3 blocks and 5 fouls drawn for an index rating of 31, the best among all Euroleague players this week. Of course, Beard also owns the one-game Euroleague index rating record of 63, amassed when he had 35 points and 19 rebounds against Skipper Bologna on January 22, 2004. This week, Simas Jasaitis of Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv had the second-highest performance rating with a 29 index. Jasaitis had 24 points while making 4 of 4 two-point and 5 of 9 three-point shots in Maccabi's road loss against DKV Joventut. Mike Wilkinson of Aris TT Bank followed in third place with a 28 index thanks to his 17 points and 8 rebounds against Pau-Orthez this week. Rudy Fernandez of DKV Joventut, Travis Hansen of Dynamo Moscow and Marcus Haislip of Efes Pilsen, each with a 27 index, complete the top individual perfomances of the week.
Individual highs: Zoran Planinic, 10 assists
Beard not only was the MVP of the Week, but also its top rebounder by pulling down 13 boards against Fenerbahce. He has also climbed to the top spot in the overall rebounders list with his average of 9.7 boards per night. Previous leader Mirsad Turkcan was sidelined for the second consecutive week but still ranks second (9.5 rpg.). Jasaitis of Maccabi Elite led all scorers with 24 points against Joventut. He ranks 33rd in the scorers list (13.1 ppg.), way behind the overall leader Juan Carlos Navarro of Winterthur FC Barcelona (18.5 ppg.). Zoran Planinic of Tau Ceramica was the only player to reach double digits in assists, dishing 10 of them in his team's road win against Efes Pilsen. Planinic has also become the overall leader (5.2 apg.), as previous leader Nikos Zisis of Benetton Treviso is now second (5.1 apg.). Jasaitis, Scoonie Penn of Olympiacos, Jonas Maciulis of Zalgiris, Kaspars Kambala of Fenerbahce and Mire Chatman of Lottomatica Roma each collected 4 steals while two-time Euroleague Defensive Player of the Year Dimitris Diamantidis of Panathinaikos had 5 blocks, more than anyone else this week. Despite not playing this week, Ricky Rubio of DKV Joventut remains the overall steals leader (4.25 spg.) while Marcus Haislip of Efes stays first in blocks (1.82 bpg.). Despite being a playmaker, Diamantidis now ties for the eighth place in blocks with 1 per game.
