Top 16 Week 2 in review
Billy Keys - Maroussi BCPartizan edged Regal Barcelona 67-66 in overtime in front of an incredible crowd at the sold-out Pionir Arena. Jan Vesely and Lawrence Roberts both recorded double doubles to lead the winners, who now lead Group E at 2-0, while Barca dropped to 1-1 and saw its 11-game winning streak snapped. The double-double was just the second of Vesely’s career and Roberts’s second is as many weeks as both players have stepped up their games in the absence of Aleks Maric. Since Maric has been sidelined by injury, Vesely has averaged 12.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2 steals compared to 6.1 points, 2.7 boards and 0.3 steals prior to the injury. For Barcelona, star guard Juan Carlos Navarro struggled and posted his worst index (-4) in nearly four years since a –7 in Game 1 of the playoffs against Real Madrid in April 2006.

Maroussi pulled off one of the biggest wins in club history by knocking off city rival and defending champion Panathinaikos 80-78 in a thriller at OAKA. Billy Keys drilled 3 clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter and Pat Calathes sank 2 to help lift his team over that of his younger brother Nick Calathes, a reserve guard for the Greens. Keys led Maroussi with 17 points on 5 for 7 three-point shooting and 5 assists. Nikola Pekovic, scored the 1,000th point of his Euroleague career in the first quarter, led Panathinaikos with 19.

Mario Kasun - Efes PilsenEfes Pilsen downed Montepaschi 88-78 in Group F thanks to a dominant Mario Kasun in the middle. Kasun posted 17 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in just 18 minutes. Overall head coach Ergin Ataman used his whole rotation, as 10 players saw at least 13 minutes of action and scored a basket and no player saw more than 26 minutes of action. In addition to the loss, Montepaschi shooting guard Henry Domercant’s pursuit of the competition’s free throw record came to an end when he missed for the first time this season, ending a run of 51 consecutive makes going back to last season.

Maccabi Electra thrilled its fans with an 81-76 win over Real Madrid, knotting the standings in Group F with four teams at 1-1. Alan Anderson produced his best outing in a Maccabi uniform to lead the winners with 20 points, making 9 free throws without a miss, plus 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. His index rating (40), assists and steals were career highs. Although Madrid outrebounded Maccabi 27-37, the hosts rejected 7 shots – and had none blocked – led by D’Or Fischer (1.5 bpg.) and Stephane Lasme (1.3 bpg.) with 3 each, placing them second and third, respectively, in that category this season

CSKA Moscow came from 15 down to beat Zalgiris 68-83 and notch its ninth consecutive win, which became the longest active streak in the league when Barcelona lost later that night. Trajan Langdon shined with 17 points as CSKA improved to 2-0 in Group G. The Russian champs enjoyed a terrific outside shooting game as five different players made multiple threes and the team shot a combined 11 for 19 (57.8%) from downtown.

Lior Eliyahu - Caja LaboralAsseco Prokom routed Unicaja 50-70 on the road for its best ever start to the Top 16. Qyntel Woods posted 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks to lead the Polish champs, who travel to Moscow for a first-place showdown with CSKA. For Unicaja, the 20-point deficit marked its worst home loss ever in the Euroleague and its 50 points scored was an all-time low for the Malaga club in Europe’s elite competition.

Olympiacos scored an 87-69 win over BC Khimki by dominating the first and third quarters. Yotam Halpein led a balanced effort with 15 points as the Reds took the top spot in Group H. Olympiacos was without All-Euroleague center Ioannis Bourousis, who missed the game with a broken nose, but the combined efforts of its other three centers, Nikola Vujcic, Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Loukas Mavrokefalides (35 points on 16-of -9 shooting) more than made up the difference. Keith Langford led Khimki with 18 points.

Caja Laboral battled back from an early double-digit deficit to sting Cibona 75-78. Mirza Teletovic sank the go-ahead three with 1:22 remaining, Carl English added 2 clutch free throws with 20 seconds to play and the Laboral defense denied Cibona in the closing seconds to give head coach Dusko Ivanovic’s side its first win in Group H. With star center Tiago Splitter and his backup Stanko Barac sidelined, forward Lior Eliyahu came through with his best game in a Caja Laboral uniform: 22 points and 9 rebounds.
