Top 16 Qualification Possibilities, Week 5
As if more evidence of a great basketball season were needed, for the first time since the Euroleague Playoffs started in 2005, all eight berths for them are open going into Week 5 of the Top 16. Even more incredible, the only eliminated team so far is last year's champion, Panathinaikos. The other 15 teams are still alive with two games left, but lots of those numbers could change on Wednesay and Thursday, when up to seven of them have chances to punch their tickets to the next round. In Group E, this week's candidates are Regal FC Barcelona and Partizan Belgrade, both looking for a return to the playoffs. In Group F, where all teams are tied 2-2, it's a matter of points as well as victories, but the right combinations of both could send Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv and Real Madrid back to the quarterfinals. In Group G, points must be watched again, but 3-1 co-leaders CSKA Moscow and Asseco Prokom Gdynia have all the cards in their hands. Both can advance while losing if the other wins and the point differences are right, CSKA for its sixth consecutive playoffs, Prokom for its first. Group H is the only one sure to save a qualifying spot for the last week of the Top 16, but it also has the only undefeated team, Olympiacos, and the Reds are the only team that can advance this week even losing a blowout.
