Pini Gershon steps aside as Maccabi coach
Pini Gershon - Maccabi Elite - FF Moscow 2005Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv announced Monday that legendary head coach Pini Gershon will not be on the sidelines of the Israeli powerhouse next season. According to the release, Gershon told management that he was not interested in coaching this season. He will remain with the club in an undefined role. "The club deeply thanks the decorated coach for the wonderful achievements he has led Maccabi to including the European Cups, Israeli League championships and Israeli Cups," the Maccabi said in the press release. Maccabi management will now begin searching for a new head coach. Gershon, 58, coached Maccabi for a total of eight seasons over three candidacies. During that time he led the club to five Euroleague Final Fours and three continental crowns as well as seven Israeli League titles and seven Israeli Cups. Gershon earned Aleksander Gomelski Euroleague Coach of the Year honors in 2005. Gershon also coached in the Euroleague with Olympiacos Piraeus between 2006 and 2008.
