BC Khimki tabs Sergey Monya
BC Khimki Moscow Region announced the signing of versatile forward Sergey Monya to a two-year deal on Thursday. Monya (204, 27) arrives from Dynamo Moscow, where he averaged 12.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.5 blocks in six Eurocup games last season. He helped Dynamo reach the Russian League semifinals, averaging 13.8 points and 7.9 rebounds in 26 games. Monya advanced to the Eurocup Final Eight with Dynamo in 2008 and 2009 and played in the Russian League final in 2009. He has also played for Portland in the NBA, Fort Worth in the NBDL and for CSKA Moscow and Avtodorozhnic Saratov in his native Russia. Monya is a regular member of the Russian national team. Earlier in his career, Monya played in three consecutive Euroleague Final Fours and won as many Russian League titles with CSKA between 2003 and 2005, the year in which his club also lifted the Russian Cup trophy. Monya helped Russian win the gold medal at EuroBasket 2007 and played at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
"Khimki is a very strong team and has made it to the Russian League finals on regular basis in the last few years. It also had a great Euroleague debut," Monya said. "The club management was interested in signing me and I am glad that I will play for Khimki next season. I hope I can help the team in the Russian League and the Euroleague. Khimki has excellent Russian players and my good friend Vitaly Fridzon."
