Alba Berlin bulks up with Femerling, Idbihi
Alba Berlin improved its frontcourt with the additions of former Euroleague champion Patrick Femerling and of power forward Yassin Idbihi, the club announced Wednesday. Femerling (216, 35) inked a one-year deal while Idbihi (207, 26) signed a three-year contract. Femerling returns to Alba for his third run with the German powerhouse. He played two seasons in Berlin between 1998 and 2000, winning a pair of domestic titles as well as the 1999 German Cup, and returned to lift another league trophy in 2008. Femerling arrives from Antalya Buyuksehir Belediye, where he averaged 6.3 points and 4.4 rebounds in 29 Turkish League games last season. He has also played for Panathinaikos and Olympiacos in Greece as well as for FC Barcelona and Caja San Fernando in Spain. Femerling helped Barcelona win a triple crown - Euroleague, Spanish League and Spanish King's Cup titles - in 2003 and added another Spanish League title in 2004. He also won back-to-back Greek League titles with Panathinaikos in 2005 and 2006. Femerling has played a record 221 games with the German national team, taking part in seven EuroBaskets, two World Championships and the 2008 Olympic games.
Idbihi arrives from New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig, where he averaged 10.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in 39 German League games last season, helping his team reach the semifinals. He has also played for Limoges CSP in France, as well as for Rhondorf and Koln in Germany. Idbihi is also a member of the German national team.
"Even though we play a very fast and aggressive style, we need a strong presence under the baskets," head coach Luka Pavicevic said. "Patrick gave us that presence in the past with his size and mentality, and we hope that he will do so in the upcoming season. Idbihi is a hard worker with great attitude and who rebounds really well. He is a strong addition at both ends."
