Team profile 2010-11: Aris BSA 2003
Aris BSAA classic team in European basketball, Aris Thessaloniki played a crucial role in the development of Greek basketball to make the sport what it is now in the country. Aris founded its basketball section in 1922 and by 1930 won its first league title. It took Aris nearly 50 years to repeat that success, winning its second league title in 1979. With Nikos Galis and Panagiotis Giannakis as its superstars, Aris established itself as a pillar of Greek basketball, winning 81 consecutive domestic games between 1985 and 1988 and reaching the 1985 Korac Cup semifinals. Aris won the Greek League-Cup trophy doubles in 1988, 1989 and 1990 and also took Greek basketball another step forward by reaching three consecutive Euroleague Final Fours in those three years. Aris won its first European trophy – the Saporta Cup – in 1993 and added another Greek League title. The club added the Korac Cup trophy in 1997 and another Greek Cup title in 1998. Several quieter years followed, but Aris bounced back by winning the FIBA Champions Cup in 2003 and the Greek Cup in 2004. Aris was close to a fourth different European title in 2006, but lost the ULEB Cup final against Dynamo. The club returned to the Euroleague soon after, making two consecutive trips to the Euroleague Top 16 in 2007 and 2008. Last season, Aris went all the way to the Eurocup Quarterfinals, but was swept by soon-to-be champ Power Electronics Valencia. Aris fans are known worldwide for a passion that is second to none and a colorful support of their team that makes any home game a true event, something to see for visitors. Aris will do its best to please them by trying to reach the Eurocup and competing again to be the very best in Europe.
