Team profile 2010-11: Belgacom Liege
Belgacom LiegeBelgacom Liege Basket is just one step away from returning to the Eurocup for the first time in five years. An emerging power in Belgian basketball, Liege will have to overcome the Qualifying Round to return to the competition. Founded in 1967 as Fleron Basketball Club, the team competed at an amateur level until 1975. The team began to compete in the second provincial division in 1977 and did not manage to reach the Belgian fourth division until 1983. It took Fleron another 15 years to make it to the Belgian second division, but everything changed as the new millennium came in. In 2000, Fleron merged with BC Hannut and Essor Hannut, moved to Liege and was guaranteed a first division spot for the 2000-01 season. It was a perfect situation, as Liege had been a city with great basketball tradition. Standard BC Liege had reached the Euroleague semifinals in 1969, losing to Real Madrid. Liege Basket quickly reached European competitions, taking part in the 2002 Korac Cup and the 2003 FIBA Champions Cup. In 2004, Liege made it to the next level by lifting its first trophy, the Belgian Cup, and advanced to the Belgian League finals, losing 3-2 against Spirou Basket. Liege made its ULEB Cup debut in 2004-05, right after lifting the Belgian Supercup. Despite the best efforts of players like Armands Skele, Ryan Moss and Guy Muya, the then-called Euphony Liege did not survive the ULEB Cup regular season. Belgacom became Liege's main sponsor in 2008 and the team went on to reach the EuroChallenge's second group stage in each of the last two season. Liege won the Belgian League regular season last year and returned to the finals for the first time in six years. Despite having the home court advantage, Spirou stood in its way of its first league title. Nevertheless, Liege is focused on growing and achieving bigger and better results, starting with going for a valuable spot in the 2010-11 Eurocup.
