Team profile 2010-11: BC Azovmash Mariupol
Azovmash MariupolBC Azovmash Mariupol is the dominant force in Ukrainian basketball, winning seven of the last eight domestic league titles, and it will be ready to try to return to the Eurocup through the Qualifying Rounds. Basketball was already played in Mariupol in the 1950s, as the team Iskra took part in Soviet competitions for decades in Zhdanov, Mariupol's old name. It was not until the mid-70s that Novator, which eventually would become Azovmash, was founded. Azovmash was created in 1990 to compete in the Ukrainian zone of the USSR League. When Ukraine became an independent country in 1991, Azovmash joined the third league. The club won the second division in 1998 to promote to the Ukrainian elite and played the 1999 Korac Cup. Azovmash soon found success by lifting its first-ever domestic trophy, the 2002 Ukrainian Cup title. The team soon shocked everyone in 2003 by lifting both the Ukranian League and the 2003 FIBA Europe Challenge Cup trophy. Azovmash added another Ukrainian League title in 2004 and soon made a financial effort to improve the team, landing Khalid El-Amin, Miroslav Beric and Serhiy Lishchuk. Those moves allowed the club to lift another league trophy in 2006 - and Azovmash has managed to defend the title ever since. El-Amin, Bajramovic, Panagiotis Liadelis, Lishchuk and Robert Gulyas took Azovmash to reach the 2007 FIBA EuroCup final, losing agaisnt Akasvayu Girona. The club joined the Eurocup in 2007-08 and reached the Eurocup Last 16 in 2008-09, winning its second consecutive Ukrainian double - league and cup titles. Last season, Azovmash stepped down in the Eurocup regular season but lifted another Ukrainian League title despite not having the home court advantage in any of its playoff series. Always proud, ambitious and ready, Azovmash is ready to battle hard to reach Europe's second club competition.
