Team Profile 2010-11: Dynamo Moscow
A former competition champion trying to return to the Eurocup, Dynamo Moscow is one of 16 teams in the Qualifying Round. Founded in 1923, the club won Soviet Championships in 1937 and 1948. Years of domestic obscurity followed, until Dynamo finished third in the Russian League five times between 1975 and 1982. Dynamo went all the way to the Korac Cup semifinals in 1981 and 1983, losing to Carrera Venezia and Limoges, respectively. Several years later, Dynamo found new success in the Saporta Cup, reaching the semifinals in 1991 and 1996. Players like Dimitri Chakouline, Sergey Bazarevich, Valeriy Dayneko and Vitaly Nosov were with the team back then. Despite playing in the 1997 Euroleague, the club disappeared due to financial problems. Dynamo reappeared in 2001 and reached the Russian League semifinals in 2004. Its ULEB Cup debut came in the 2004-05 season when the team won its regular season group, but was upset by Hemofarm in the eighthfinals. Dynamo landed Mire Chatman, Ruben Douglas and Lazaros Papadopoulos and marched to the ULEB Cup title in 2006, downing Aris BSA 60-73 in the final. Dynamo did well in its Euroleague return in 2007, winning its regular season group and surviving the Top 16 before losing to mighty Panathinaikos in the playoffs. Dynamo made it to the Eurocup Final Eight in the next two seasons, losing against Akasvayu in the 2008 semifinals and to Hemofarm in the 2009 quarterfinals. Last season, Dynamo returned to the Russian League semifinals, but did not survive its Eurocup regular season group. The 2010-11 season may mark a turning point for Dynamo, which may start by winning its Qualifying Round series and reaching the Eurocup. With its tradition, organization and experience, Dynamo will prove to be a tough team to beat as it eyes a Eurocup return.
