A big day for Slovenian basketball
Ljubljana was one of the sports capitals of Europe on Wednesday. The Slovenian capital officially opened the new and modern Stozice Arena, which definitely belongs among the greatest arenas in Europe, with a capitacy for 12,550 fans. The opening game was played between the Slovenian National Team and the Spanish National Team, current World and European Champion, on Tuesday. The hosts could not inaugurate their new arena with a win as Slovenia lost after overtime, 72-79, but the result of this friendly opening game was not really important. The most important thing was the official opening of new Stozice Arena which was also fully packed for the first time! Union Olimpija will play its Euroleague, Adriatic League and Slovenian League games in Stozice Arena starting this same 2010-11 season. Their first opponent in Euroleague will be Turkish powerhouse Efes Pilsen on November 25. The celebration of sports in Ljubljana will continue Wednesady, with a football game between Slovenia and Australia, on the new football stadium which holds 16,000 spectators, and was built in same sports complex as the magnificent new arena.
