Team Profile 2010-11: Entente Orleanaise
In less than two decades, Entente Orleanaise Loiret has climbed from the French third division to take part in the Euroleague, but the club remains ambitious and will now try to make its Eurocup debut through the Qualifying Round. The club started in 1993 as the merger of teams from three cities: Orleans, Fleury-les-Aubrais and Saint-Jean-de-Braye. Even though the team soon reached the French second division, it settled there for more than a decade until finally winning promotion to the French League in 2006. Far from being an average newcomer, Orleans qualified for the Semaine des As cup tournament in its very first season and missed the 2006-07 French League playoffs on a tie-breaker. Orleans managed to stay out of trouble in 2007-08 and took yet another great leap forwards in 2008-09. The club made it to the Semaine des As final, losing against Le Mans, and finished in second place in the regular season for its first-ever French League playoff appearance. Orleans fought its way to the title game in Bercy, but Asvel stood in its way to the French League crown. Orleans earned a spot in the 2009-10 Euroleague Qualifying Rounds and went against all odds by downing Spirou Basket and Benetton to reach Europe's most prestigious competition. Despite wins against Partizan and Unicaja, Orleans did not survive the regular season. In France, Orleans managed to win its first trophy, the French Cup, by downing Gravelines 73-69 in the final. Orleans also returned to the Semaine des As final, registering a heartbreaking 70-69 loss against Asvel Basket, and was one win away from reaching the French League final. Now Orleans will try to earn a Eurocup spot and prove itself as a very tough opponent and a force to be reckoned with in French basketball and throughout the continent.
