World Championship team profile: Argentina
Pablo Prigioni - Argentina (Jose Jimenez/FIBA)Argentina is the No. 1 team in the FIBA world rankings and that is no fluke. A gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games and a bronze in 2008 proved to the world what a great team Argentina has, but those are just two of the many medals it has amassed in recent years. In fact, Argentina has won a medal at seemingly every international tournament it has competed in recent years and is coming off a runner-up finish at the South American Championships this summer. However, after since finishing second at the 2002 World Championships, Argentina failed to medal four years ago in Japan. Head coach Sergio Hernandez has the core of his great teams intact, with stars Luis Scola, Carlos Delfino, Pablo Prigioni and Andres Nocioni all available. Although the members of the Argentina roster play their club ball on three continents, their longevity and chemistry always help to find the magic that has made Argentina one of the best in basketball over the past decade.

Head Coach: Sergio Hernandez
Argentina’s best players all seem to have played their formative years in the Euroleague and are well known to European basketball fans. Real Madrid playmaker Prigioni, Scola and Nocioni are all former All-Euroleague selections and Delifino has played in the finals of both the Euroleague and Eurocup. Prigioni is the motor that makes Argentina go as he teams up with Delfino in the backcourt. Paolo Quinteros provides valuable scoring off the bench. Minutes will be hard to come by at small forward with Nocioni, Pancho Jasen of Estudiantes and Federico Kammerichs all vying for minutes. Scola and Fabricio Oberto are the stars of the frontline. Scola, the MVP of the 2009 FIBA Americas Championships, is the team’s top scoring-threat, however his all-around game from the low post and Oberto’s toughness, movement without the ball and vision make them a very difficult tandem. The fact that fellow big men Roman Gonzales, Leo Gutierrez and Juan Gutierrez are also all back from the last Olympic team is an added bonus for Argentina. All told, Argentina brings a veteran core of players that believe in its trademark of tough, team-first basketball, which is exactly what is needed to challenge for another major medal.
