World Championship team profile: Serbia
A new golden era for Serbian basketball began last summer when head coach Dusko Ivanovic led a young and talented squad to the EuroBasket 2009 title game. Serbia won’t be able to sneak up on anybody this time in Turkey, but with the bulk of the stars from its silver-medal run back, Ivanovic has good reason to target another medal for his collection. It should not come as a surprise that Serbia is ready to challenge for greatness. In recent years, it has won the European Under-20 and Under-18 championships twice each and also lifted the trophy at the 2007 World U-19 Championships. But beyond the talent, Team Serbia has exhibited a camaraderie and chemistry formed at the junior ranks that have helped them play beautiful team basketball.

Head Coach:
Dusan Ivkovic
At the heart of Serbia’s success is point guard Milos Teodosic, who was named Euroleague MVP last season at Olympiacos. Teodosic’s greatness is enhanced by all the talent around him, allowing the playmaker to score at will or create for others, depending on what the defenses leave open. Milenko Tepic of Panathinaikos, Aleksandar Rasic of Partizan and Stefan Markovic of Benetton all help create a deep and dangerous backcourt. The continued development of Real Madrid’s Novica Velickovic and Hemofarm’s Milan Macvan – the respective 2008-09 Euroleague and Eurocup Rising Star award winners – Nemanja Bjelica of Caja Laboral and Marko Keselj of Olympiacos gives Serbia some scary options at forward, while Nenad Krstic shines at center with Regal FC Barcelona’s Kosta Perovic and Efes Pilsen’s Miroslav Raduljica backing him up. The complete picture shows a Serbian squad devoid of any weaknesses built around rising stars happy to play together. With coaching great Ivanovic running the show, Serbia may have the recipe for another medal in Turkey.
