World Championship team profile: Iran
In just a few short years, Iran has become the toast of Asian basketball and has won the last two Asian championships – going undefeated en route to the title in 2009. Now the job for head coach Veselin Matic’s men is to climb one step higher and begin challenging at the world level. Iran began two years ago when it played at the Olympic Games for the second time ever, though it returned home without winning a game. In Turkey, Iran will partake in the FIBA World Championships for the very first time, hoping to break the ice and establish itself among the world’s elite.

Head Coach:
Veselin Matic
Because the bulk of Team Iran plays in the Iranian League, few of the players are recognizable players outside of Asia. One of them is forward Samad Nikkhah Bahrami, the team captain who played in the French League two years ago. Meanwhile center Hamed Haddadi was the leading rebounder and shot-blocker at the Asian Championships. Other major contributors for Iran are sharpshooter Hamed Afagh Eslamieh and point guard Mehdi Kamrani, both double-digit scorers last summer in China. Backup point guard Javad Davari will also play an important role, while power forward Arsalan Kazemi, the team’s youngest player, has shown signs of becoming Iran’s next big star. The expectations are not high yet for Iran at the World Championships, however it is surely not a team to be taken lightly as it continues to grow at the global level.
