Team Profile 2010-11: Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem
Just like last season, Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem will try to make it to the Eurocup through the Qualifying Rounds. The Eurocup is Hapoel's signature competition. It has competed in the competition six times already and achieved the club’s crowning moment in 2004. Hapoel rewrote European basketball history with an incredible postseason runs as it beat Prokom, Lietuvos Rytas and FMP Zeleznik to reach the 2004 ULEB Cup Final. Hapoel then knocked off mighty Real Madrid in the title game in Charleroi, winning its first – and to date only – European trophy. Hapoel had always taken a back seat in Israel to archrival Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, but the ULEB Cup gave the club a chance to prove that Israeli basketball goes well beyond one name. Hapoel’s other trophies come from the Israeli Cup, which it won in 1996, 1997, 2007 and 2008. Hapoel has also done a lot for Israeli basketball in European competitions, appearing in the Korac Cup and the Saporta Cup throughout the 1990s. Hapoel even managed to play the original Euroleague season in 2000-01. The club made it to the Saporta Cup quarterfinals in 1996 and reached the semifinals in 2002 before losing to eventual champ Montepaschi Siena. Hapoel returned to the ULEB Cup semifinals in 2006, but lost against Dynamo Moscow. It reached the quarterfinals in 2007. Last season, Hapoel survived the qualifying rounds, reached the Last 16 and advanced to the quarterfinals on a record-breaking performance against Galatasaray Cafe Crown. Despite a 6-point lead from the first leg, Hapoel could not overcome Alba in the two-game series. Hapoel also ranked second in the Israeli League regular season and won the Winner Cup title. Few teams will be as dangerous as Hapoel, which brings experience, tradition and a fanatic support at its home games as it tries to make the most out of the chance to return to the Eurocup.
