World Championship team profile: Tunisia
Basketball fever has hit Tunisia, a country that will make its maiden appearance in the FIBA World Championships this summer in Turkey. It was a long road to reach the point where Tunisia would begin competing alongside the best teams in the world, but after head coach Adel Tlatli led his charges to a third-place finish at the African Championships last year in Libya, Tunisia is on the map. Tlatli, the longtime coach of the national team, has put in an immense effort to bring the players, largely based in Tunisia, together to maximize their talents. Expectations may not be high this time, but it is clear that good things are cooking in Tunisian basketball.

Head Coach:
Adel Tlatli
The vast majority of the Tunisian roster plays its club basketball for Tunisian side, with practically half the roster coming from the top two sides in the country, a fact that bodes well for chemistry. Tunisia’s best and best-known player is shooting guard Amine Rzig, who led the team in scoring, rebounding and assists last summer as he was named to the African Championships All-Tournament team. Marouan Kechrid, who like Rzig plays his club basketball outside of Tunisia, partners with the star in the backcourt. Versatile forward Mohamed Hdidane, swingman Atef Maoua and shot-blocking ace Salah Mejri are also important members of Tlatli’s lineup. Although advancing past the group stage may be beyond Tunisia’s wildest dreams today, these players will proudly take the floor and fight in every game knowing that the future stars of Tunisian basketball are looking up to them.>
