World Championship team profile: Greece
A finalist at the last FIBA World Championships and a medallist last summer at the European Championships, Greece arrives in Turkey this time the same ambition of returning home after celebrating on the podium. Head coach Jonas Kazlauskas is in his second year at the helm of Greece and benefits from keeping the core players from years past while slowly brining young talent into the mix. As many as five players from the ’06 silver-medal team could be in Turkey and nine players from the ’09 bronze-medal side are also in the running to make Kazlauskas’s final cut. Ultimately, there is no doubt that Team Greece, made up mainly of experienced players from Euroleague rosters, has all it takes to challenge again for a medal this summer.

Head Coach:
Jonas Kazlauskas
Injuries to big men have caused concern throughout the summer, but both Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Olympiacos’s Ioannis Bourousis should be wearing blue and white come tip-off time. They are joined by Antonis Fotsis and Ian Vougioukas, both of Panathinaikos, in the frontcourt. Georgios Printezis of Unicaja and Kostas Vasiliadis could see most of the minutes at small forward. Former Final Four MVPs Dimitris Diamantidis of Panathinaikos and Vassilis Spanoulis of Olympiacos, another Panathinaikos man in Nick Calathes and Montepashi Siena’s Nikos Zisis make up one of the best guard foursomes that will be on display in Turkey. Expectations will be high as Greece arrives with a combination of talent, experience and proven winners that few others can match, setting the stage for many exciting games as the tournament progresses.
