World Championship team profile: Puerto Rico
Basketball is a beloved sport in Puerto Rico, a nation that features its domestic league in the summer, allowing many of its best players to suit up in their homeland, even if they play their club basketball in Europe. The Puerto Rican national team has unique feature with a roster packed with players with experience on both sides of the Atlantic. Puerto Rico used that to its advantage last summer as it climbed to the title game at the FIBA Americas Championships, but ultimately came up one shot short in the final against Brazil. Nevertheless head coach Manuel Cintron’s men cinched a berth at the FIBA World Championships for the seventh straight time. Puerto Rico brings back eight players from that squad as well as the talent, experience and – perhaps most importantly – the confidence to go far this time in Turkey.

Head Coach:
Manolo Cintron
Puerto Rico’s strengths begin at points guard, where former Maccabi Tel Aviv playmaker Carlos Arroyo and J.J. Barea form a lethal duo. Meanwhile A.D. Vassalo of Asvel Basket and Carmelo Lee provide scoring punch from the wings. Renaldo Balkman and Nathan Peavy give Puerto Rico options at power forward. Veteran center Daniel Santiago, who is familiar with the courts in Turkey after playing for Efes Pilsen last season, and Peter John Ramos are a formidable tandem inside. The best teams in the world are all aware of Puerto Rico’s prowess and won’t be taking it lightly. Still, few would be surprised if it puts together a strong run in Turkey.
