World Championship team profile: Canada
Canadian basketball went through a quite spell in recent seasons, however a semifinals berth at last summer’s FIBA Americas Championships may have marked a turnaround. It also secured a spot for Canada at the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Turkey, where head coach Leo Rautins plans for his team to take another step towards establish Canada as a force to be reckoned with. Canada will celebrate its 13th appearance at the World Championships and it has reached the quarterfinals six times so far. Although the Canadian roster is not packed with household names, it does boast a unified and hungry squad more than capable of upsetting teams with bigger reputations and getting back to the quarters and even beyond.

Head Coach:
Leo Rautins
Injuries have stripped Canada of some of its better-known players, like Euroleague veteran Carl English or big man Jesse Young, who played in the Eurocup last season. However the preparation games have shown that there is no shortage of players able and ready to step up. Without English, Denham Brown and the coach’s son, Andy Rautins, become important scorers for Team Canada. Jermaine Anderson handles the playmaking duties. Defensive ace Joel Anthony and another player with Euroleague experience, Levon Kendall, anchor the frontline, while Aaron Doornekamp, Olu Famutimi, Jevohn Shepherd and Jermaine Bucknor fill at the roster at the forward spots. The buildup to the World Championships has shown that Canada arrives with a tough-to-beat side that could have a major impact on this tournament.
