Team Profile 2010-11: KK Zagreb
KK ZagrebKK Zagreb Croatia Osiguranje has the chance to advance to the Eurocup for the first time since 2004 if it survives the Qualifying Rounds. Founded in 1970 as KK Siget, the club became OKK Novi Zagreb and managed to reach the Yugoslavian League in 1989. It took its current name in 1991 and joined the Croatian League when the competition was created that year. Zagreb has been competitive in its domestic competition ever since, challenging bigger names like Cibona, Zadar and Split. Zagreb finished third in 1993 and 1994 and made its debut in European competitions back in 1992-93, losing in the Korac Cup quarterfinals against FC Barcelona on point differential. It also reached the 1997 Eurocup eighthfinals, losing against Idea Slask. Zagreb continued to regularly play in European competitions until 2004, when it made its ULEB Cup debut. In Croatia, Zagreb finished the regular season third in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2007 and has advanced to the Croatian League semifinals every season since 2002, in addition to competing in the Adriatic League. Zagreb also has a reputation for developing young talent, as players like Marko Tomas, Mario Stojic, Josip Sesar, Damir Miljkovic and Ante Tomic have came out of its youth teams. Zagreb finally lifted its first trophy in 2008, the Croatian Cup, downing cross-town rivals Cibona 75-73 in the title game. That season, Zagreb reached the FIBA EuroCup quarterfinals, but eventual champ Barons stood on its way. Now the club comes off its best season ever after lifting a second Croatian Cup trophy thanks to a 81-74 win in the title game against Cibona behind 24 points from Luka Zoric. Moreover, despite Tomic leaving to Madrid midway through the season, Zagreb finished sixth in the Adriatic League, returned to the Croatian League semifinals and reached the EuroChallenge quarterfinals, where it lost against Cibona and Krasnye Krylia, respectively. Zagreb is now ready to step up for more as it tries to make it to the 2010-11 Eurocup.
