After dominating its domestic competition for years, perennial Czech champion CEZ Basketball Nymburk now has the chance to fight for a Euroleague berth via the qualifying rounds. A total of seven Czech League championships and five national cups since 2004 leaves no doubt about Nymburk's dominance. Founded in 1930, Nymburk is the oldest basketball club in the Czech Republic, but its finest moment is now. Things changed for the good in 1995 when the current management, featuring former coaches and players, took charge. Nymburk climbed to the third division in 1997 and by 2000 had won the second and advanced to the elite level in the country. Nymburk quickly established itself in the Czech League and ranked third at the end of the 2001-02 season, in which the club also played the Northern European Basketball League. Nymburk made it to the 2003 Czech League finals, but lost against Opava 4-3. Nymburk lifted the Czech League trophy the next year and has successfully defended it every season since. CEZ, the largest Czech utility company, soon became a general partner, allowing the club to sign even better players and to see increased success in European competitions too, starting with the FIBA Europe League eighthfinals in 2005, when it lost to eventual champ Dynamo St. Petersburg. Nymburk made its ULEB Cup debut in the 2006-07 season and managed to battle its way to the elimination rounds. Nymburk remained a dominant force in the Czech Republic, where no team has come close to knocking it off. And it results keep improving in the Eurocup. Last season Nymburk advanced to the eighthfinals for the first time in club history, losing against Bizkaia Bilbao Basket on points differential. Back in its domestic competition, Nymburk won the Czech League regular season with a 40-4 record and did not find much trouble in claiming its seventh consecutive league crown. A new future is here for Nymburk, as not only does the club have the chance to make it to the Euroleague, but it will also make its Adriatic League debut this season. Ambitious management with a wild fan base puts Nymburk is in the right scenario to keep growing.
