Union Olimpija made another move with an eye to the future by inking top prospect Sasu Salin to a three-year deal, the club announced Friday. Salin (190, 19) arrives from Honka Espoo Playboys, where he averaged 9.2 points and 2.7 rebounds in 48 Finnish League games last season. He also played for Tapiolan Honka during the 2009-10 season, averaging 17.3 points and 6.6 rebounds in 13 Finnish second division games. Salin made his Finnish national team debut this summer in the EuroBasket 2011 preliminary rounds. To date, he has averaged 12.4 points on 14-of-22 three-point shooting in five games. He becomes the second-ever Finnish player to join Olimpija, joining Teemu Rannikko, who played for the Slovenian powerhouse between 2005 and 2007.
"Salin is an extremely young player, but considering what he has shown with the Finnish national team, we believe he is ready to play basketball at the highest level," Olimpija head coach Jure Zdovc said. "He can play at both guard positions and is extremely good long-distance shooter with a good feel for offensive rebounds. We expect him to come to Ljubljana as soon as he finishes his duties with the Finnish national team."
