ASSECO PROKOM keeps Ratko Varda
Polish powerhouse Asseco Prokom Gydnia reached a new agreement with center Ratko Varda to extend his contract until the end of the 2010-11 season. Varda (213, 31) arrived to Gydnia with a one-month contract last December but Prokom picked up its option to keep him until the end of the season. He averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 rebounds in 12 Euroleague games with Prokom. Varda boosted his numbers up to 12.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in the Top 16, allowing Prokom to reach the Quarterfinal Playoffs for the first time in club history. He also helped Prokom to win yet another Polish League title. Varda finished the 2008-09 season with Khimki Moscow Region, averaging 6.7 points in six Eurocup games, helping the club reach the title game. He made his debut with Partizan Belgrade in 1998 and in 2001 he crossed the pond to join Detroit of the NBA. He was traded to Washington and was back to Europe for the 2002-03 season with Union Olimpija Ljubljana, where he won the Slovenian Cup. After that he played in Greece (Apollon Patras), Turkey (Besiktas JK), Ukraine (BC Kyiv) and Spain (Real Madrid and ViveMenorca). In the 2006-07 season with Madrid, Varda won the Spanish League title and the ULEB Cup. He played for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team in the EuroBasket qualifying last season, averaging 12.5 points in 21 minutes over four games.
