Khimki, Spirou edge closer to glory
BC Khimki Moscow Region and Spirou Basket Charleroi are a step closer to the 2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season after starting the third – and final – round of qualifying with respective road wins.
Khimki downed Le Mans 56-70
on the road as Keith Langford and Thomas Kelati scored 19 points apiece. The series resumes Friday in Russia where Khimki can clinch a regular season berth with a win or a loss by 13 points or fewer.
Spirou topped Alba Berlin 81-77
thanks to Demond Mallet’s 26 points. Spirou dominated the game in the second half behind Joseph Gomis and a great Mallet. Alba hosts the return leg in the German capital on Sunday knowing it must win by at least 5 points to secure its return to the Euroleague. If Spirou wins the series, it goes to Euroleague Regular Season Group B to face Olympiacos, Real Madrid, Unicaja, Virtus Roma and Brose Baskets. If that happend, Khimki will be in Regular Season Group A alongside Caja Laboral, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, Partizan Belgrade, Asseco Prokom and Zalgiris Kaunas. If Alba wins the series, however, it will be placed in Group A and Khimki will go to Group B to avoid having two German teams - Alba and Brose Baskets - iin the same regular season group.

Khimki, Spirou make it to the big-time!
The two survivors after three Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds are Khimki Moscow Region of Russia and Spirou Basket of Belgium! Khimki returns to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague after making its debut last season. Spirou reaches Europe's top competition after an eight-year absence.
Khimki went first through the door to the regular season by thrashing Le Mans 87-66
in Game 2 of their make-or-break series on Friday. Thomas Kelati led the winners with 17 points, while Keith Langford added 16. Khimki won all six of its qualifying-round games, enjoying second-leg homecourt advantage in all three series. Spirou, meanwhile, advanced from the disadvantage of finishing its last two series on the road. In the final game of the qualifying rounds,
Spirou tied host Alba 70-70
before 11,840 fans in Berlin to make a four-point win in their first game hold up for the series victory. Spirou had led Game 2 by 11 points with under 4 minutes to play and withstood a furious Alba rally thanks to Demond Mallet's late pair of free throws. Brian Greene topped Spirou's scorers with 17 points, while Chris Hill had 14, Andre Riddick 13 and 9 rebounds. Khimki goes to Group A of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season to face Caja Laboral, Maccabi Electra, Partizan m:ts, Asseco Prokom and Zalgiris. Spirou goes to Group B along with Olympiacos, Real Madrid, Unicaja, Virtus Roma and Brose Baskets.

Alba, Khimki,Le Mans and Spirou win openers!
The second phase of the
Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds
began on Tuesday with three home teams and one road warrior punching out opening-night wins! Each will have to defend those results and victory margins when their series go to the opponents' home courts for the second and final game on Friday. No doubt the team with the biggest edge coming out of Tuesday is
Khimki Moscow Region
, which routed host Budivelnik 58-87 on the road in Ukraine as Keith Langford once again led the way with 16 points. Khimki was followed by three home winners.
Spirou Basket downed Unics 75-69
in Charleroi, Belgium to set up an intriguing re-match in Kazan, Russia on Friday. Brent Wright led Spirou to victory with 19 points. In the German capital of Berlin, meanwhile, host
Alba outlasted visiting Hemofarm Stada by 73-67
behind 15 points from Marko Marinovic. Alba led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter before Hemofarm rallied to cut the difference before heading home to Vrsac, Serbia for Friday's decider. And, in an all-French showdown, host
Le Mans downed visiting Asvel 85-75
in a game that was tied until late in the final quarter. Le Mans got 18 points from big man J.P. Batiste and has the shortest trip of all Tuesday's winners before the rematch on Friday in Lyon, France. The winners of these four series will face off in the last of the qualifying rounds next week to see which two survive to reach the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season!

Alba, Le Mans, Khimki, Spirou advance!
The Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds are down to four teams fighting next week for two places in the continent's top competition. The second phase of qualifying concluded on Friday with appropriate dramatics as three out of four two-game series were decided by a basket or less. The only team to win both games of its series was
Khimki Moscow Region, which defeated Budivelnik 74-67
behind 14 points from Keith Langford. Khimki won the series by 36 total points. The others could not have been closer as three road teams lost but succeeded - just barely - in protecting their victory margins from earlier in the week. For
Spirou Basket lost by 75-71 at Unics Kazan
in Russia, but 3 late triples by Demond Mallet and Chris Hill meant a two-point victory in the series. Spirou had won their first game by 6. It was even more dramatic for
Alba Berlin, which lost 78-73 to Hemofarm Stada
in Vrsac, Serbia, but survived that series by a single point on a Julius Jenkins triple with 2 seconds left. Alba had trailed by 10 entering that game's final minute. And finally, in all-French battle to finish the phase,
Le Mans fell to host Asvel 71-63
but protected its 10-point win from the first game thanks in part to Antoine Diot scoring 18 points, many down the stretch. While the losers in those series will play in the 2010-11 Eurocup Regular Season, the winners face off in the third and last of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds next Tuesday and Friday. It's Alba-Spirou and Khimki-Le Mans next week to reach the Euroleague! In one series, it's Khimki vs. Le Mans, with the Russian powerhouse enjoyed the advantage of playing Game 2 on Friday at home. In the other series, Alba vs. Spirou, it's the German club that has the same advantage.

Season opens with four road winners!
The first phase of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds opened on Tuesday with four games out of seven won by road teams and as many decided by 7 or fewer points. Those results promise dramatics when the same opponents travel to meet again on Friday and decide their two-game series on aggregate score. Drama was already served in the openers as
Khimki Moscow Region survived 74-77 at Pepsi Caserta
in Italy on Keith Langford's buzzer-beating triple. He finished with 19 points and his team was the night's fourth road winner. Previously,
Le Mans Sarthe Basket tripped up Banvit 72-78
on J.P. Batista's 18 points,
Unics strong>Unics Kazan topped GasTerra Flames 72-84
behind Maciej Lampe's 26 points and 13 rebounds, while
Hemofarm Stada rolled Hapoel Galil-Gilboa 84-97
on Milan Macvan's 31-point show. Three home teams notched victories to travel with points in favor to Game 2 of their series on Friday.
Chorale Roanne outlasted Alba Berlin 86-79
on Pape Amagou's 22 points;
Spirou Basket dumped CEZ Nymburk 79-68
as Joseph Gomis made 4 three-pointers among 18 points; and
Buducnost upended Asel 69-64
as Vladimir Dragicevic also scored 18. The winners on aggregate score after the re-matches on Friday will advance to the second qualifying round next week!

Seven advance to second qualifying round!
Seven teams kept their dreams alive by advancing in the
Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds
on Friday. Russia produced the first two winners as
Unics Unics topped GasTerra Flames 78-63
behind 22 points from Marko Popovic and
Khimki blasted Caserta 85-66
as Ben Eze scored 14. Both teams swept those two-game series, but only one other team could match them. That was .
Le Mans Sarthe Basket, which downed Banvit BK 78-66
behind Antoine Diot's 18 points. Everyone else had to fight about point difference to win. Some, like
Spirou Basket, a 73-71 loser at CEZ Nymburk
, held hard-won differences despite falling on the road. Othes, like
Hemofarm, which lost to visiting Galil by 77-86
had to fight point-by-point for survival at home. Still others had to overcome first-game road losses. That was the case as
Alba Berlin downed Chorale Roanne 95-83
behind 23 points from Julius Jenkins and, last but not least, as
Asvel Basket battled into overtime to outlast Buducnost 85-76
and win that series by 3 points as Angel Vassallo scored 20. When the dust settled, the following matchups were set for the second of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds: Alba Berlin vs. KK Hemofarm, Unics Kazan vs. Spirou Basket, Asvel Basket vs. Le Mans and BC Khimki vs. Budivelnyk, which received a first-round bye. The first game of the second round is next Tuesday, September 28, and the second on Friday, October 1.
