Holden first to play in 200 Euroleague games!
All-Decade guard J.R. Holden of CSKA Moscow added another accolade to his already-full list on Thursday when he became the first player to take part in 200 Euroleague Basketball games. Holden came off the bench in the first quarter of CSKA's season-opening Turkish Airlines Euroleague game on Thursday against visiting Armani Jeans Milano. Before the game, at midcourt, CSKA presented Holden with a commemorative jersey with the number 200 on the back. The achievement resonated even more with the home fans in Moscow who knew that Holden had missed much of the preseason due to medical concerns that were eventually discounted. When the team returned from the Euroleague American Tour earlier this week, Holden was waiting, ready to practice and to play tonight in the uniform he has worn since 2003 as the one constant in CKSA's record eight consecutive Final Four appearances. "We are happy that everything is fine with him," CSKA head coach Dusko Vujosevic said. "He missed three weeks of practicing, so he will need time to get back into shape, but he is really precious for our team."
Holden, 34, has been among the top players in the competition since it began 10 years ago and was selected to the Euroleague All-Decade Team last season. He played the 2001-02 season with AEK Athens before joining CSKA, where he has made 180 of his 200 appearances. Holden has appeared as a starter 176 times. Among his highlights are reaching the last eight Final Fours and winning the 2006 and 2008 Euroleague titles with CSKA. Holden enters the current season ranked fourth all-time in scoring with 2,324 points, second in three-pointers made (364), third in assists (574) and fourth in steals (242). Holden was tied on the game-played list with Gianluca Basile of Regal FC Barcelona, who is injured to start this season. Third on the list is Holden's former CSKA teammate, Theo Papaloukas, who played his 198th game on Monday, for his current team, Olympiacos.
