Sportingbet Week 2 MVP: Bootsy Thornton, Efes Pilsen
Efes Pilsen guard Marvis Bootsy Thornton added another first to his long list of accomplishments in an impressive Euroleague Basketball career by earning Sportingbet Week 2 MVP honors with a performance index rating of 29 in his team's 79-63 home victory over Power Electronics Valencia on Wednesday. Thornton tallied 19 points on near-perfect shooting, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in a splendid all-around effort. He scored 6 points in the first quarter, 6 in the second and 7 in the third, leading the way as Efes stormed back from an early double-digit deficit to register its first win of the season. Thornton's double-double is the third of his lengthy Euroleague Basketball career, but his first since the end of his debut season, when he had 26 points and 10 rebounds in the third-place game at the 2004 Final Four. Brian Roberts, star of Brose Baskets Bamberg's upset win over Olympiacos, and Regal FC Barcelona big man Erazem Lorbek were next on the list of top individual performers with performance index ratings of 27. Roberts scored 23 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in helping his team to a 73-61 victory. Lorbek was good for 19 points, 5 boards and 4 assists as Barcelona beat Cholet 77-84 on the road. Rounding out the list of top Week 2 performers were Sofoklis Schortsanitis, who scored 24 and grabbed 5 rebounds to help Maccabi Electra beat Zalgiris, and Caja Laboral playmaker Marcelinho Huertas, who amassed 12 points and 8 assists in a victory at Asseco Prokom. Big Sofo and Marcelinho both had indexes of 26.
Individual performances: Doron Perkins, 7 steals
Schortsanitis was also Week 2's top scorer with his 24-point performance and he now averages 16.5 points per game, good for a six-way tie for ninth best in the competition. The leading scorers through two weeks are two-time Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy winner Igor Rakocevic of Efes Pilsen and Cibona Zagreb's Bojan Bogdanovic, each with 21.5 points per game. Real Madrid center Ante Tomic skied for 14 rebounds this week, more than any other player in the competition. He now sits atop the Euroleague rebounding charts with 10 per game. The 8 assists dished by Huertas where matched only by Doron Perkins of Maccabi for the most this week. Panathinaikos playmaker Dimitris Diamantidis leads the season-long list with 7 per game. Perkins recorded 7 steals against Zalgiris, tying him for 10th place on the all-time list for steals in one game. He also tops this season's standings with 4 per game. Five players: Andrea Crosariol and Josh Heytvelt of Virtus Roma, Andre Riddick of Spirou Charleroi, Boban Majramovic of CSKA Moscow and Perkins share the weekly lead with a pair of blocked shots. Mirza Begic of Zalgiris leads them all with 2.5 per game this season. Thornton, the Week 2 MVP, was joined by Lietuvis Rytas big man Kenan Bajramovic (14 points, 12 rebounds) as the only two players to record double doubles in Week 2 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular season.
