Sportingbet Week 4 MVP: Berni Rodriguez, Unicaja
Unicaja team captain Berni Rodriguez surely won’t forget his performance on Wednesday anytime soon. The veteran guard posted career highs with 24 points and 10 assists and was the main catalyst as his team routed Virtus Roma 104-83. And when the week ended, he had also earned the Sportingbet MVP honor for Week 4. Rordriguez, who is marking his 10th Euroleague season with his hometown club, shot 6 for 9 from downtown and also grabbed 5 rebounds and 3 steals en route to a 36 performance index rating. That was not only the best index of his Euroleague career, but also the best in the Euroleague so far this season. Following in second place this week, Cibona Zagreb big man Leon Radosevic also had a career-best game despite his team’s 71-84 loss against Cholet Basket. Radosevic scored 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and posted an index rating of 31 – all Euroleague career-highs for him. Centers Radoslav Nesterovic of Olympiacos and Mirza Begic of Zalgiris Kaunas tied forward Jonas Maciulis of Armani Jeans Milano for this week’s third-best performances. Nesterovic scored 18 points on perfect shooting, grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 3 shots in an 86-78 victory over Spirou Charleroi. Begic tallied 18 points with just 1 miss, grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 2 shots in an 88-92 upset victory at Caja Laboral. And Maciulis posted 26 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists as Milano won big, 69-80, at Power Electronics Valencia. All three had index ratings of 28.
Individual performances: Sergey Monya, 4 blocked shots
Maciulis and Union Olimpija big man Kevinn Pinkney were the top scorers in Week 4 with 26 points each. Pinkney is now third in the league in scoring with 16.3 points per game. Efes Pilsen guard Igor Rakocevic, a two-time Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy winner, leads the Euroleague this season with 17.8 points per game. Zalgiris forward Paulius Jankunas grabbed 13 rebounds in his team’s win, which was the most this week in the Euroleague. Jankunas is averaging 8 rebounds per game this season, second only to Cholet Basket big man Randal Falker with 8.5 per game. Rodriguez’s 10 assists led all Euroleague players in Week 4. He is now tied for fourth in the league with 4.8 per game, while Olympiacos guard Vassilis Spanoulis has averaged 6.3 assists, the most in the league this season. David Hawkins of Armani Jeans and Bo McCalebb of Montepaschi both had 5 steals in their games, best of the week. McCalebb is now the overall steals leader with 3.3 per game. Hawkins is tied for sixth with 2.3 per game. Sergey Monya set a career high with 4 blocks against Maccabi and is now second in the league this season with 2 blocks per game. Begic leads the league with 2.5 blocks on average. Rodriguez, Radosevic, Cholet Basket forward Sammy Mejia (17 points, 11 rebounds), Fenerbahce Ulker power forward Mirsad Turkcan (13 points, 10 rebounds), Jankunas (12 points, 13 rebounds) and Efes Pilsen center Kerem Gonlum (10 points, 12 rebounds) all recorded double-doubles in Week 4.
