China, UK join Game of the Week live broadcasts
The live broadcast of tonight's Game of the Week between Regal FC Barcelona and Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv will have the largest potential audience in European club basketball history as both China and the United Kingdom join a list of 166 countries where the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 will be available.
Tonight's will be the first Game of the Week televised live in China, where new Euroleague Basketball partner China Sports Programs Network (CSPN) reaches an estimated 245 million households within the six provinces receiving the network's terrestrial signal and a total of 800 million via satellite throughout the country. The game marks the beginning of a four-year agreement with CSPN that will give its viewers the opportunity to see five Euroleague games per week, at least two of which will be shown live. All games aired by CSPN will also be simulcast on CBC, one of the most important mobile phone operators in China, reaching all 31 provinces.
At the same time, Euroleague Basketball has announced the renewal of an agreement with ESPN UK to show the Game of the Week live to several million households in England, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales starting tonight. ESPN UK is available within cable and satellite platforms such as Sky for DTH, on Virgin for cable, on BT Vision for IPTV and on Top up TV for DTT.
"We are delighted to welcome basketball fans in China and the United Kingdom to our growing audience of global viewers," Euroleague Basketball CEO Jordi Bertomeu said. "We are sure that they will find, as so many international fans before them have, a competition that is growing stronger every day in prestige, excitement and integrity. We will work to fulfill the challenge of entertaining fans across the world with great basketball."
The Barcelona vs. Maccabi matchup marks the first Game of the Week of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague's second phase, the Top 16. Barcelona is the defending Euroleague champion, while Maccabi - itself a five-time continental title-winner - had the best record of the regular season.
