Playoffs Game 2 MVP: Malik Hairston, Montepaschi Siena
March 25, 2011
Malik Hairston’s best Euroleague game yet lifted Montepaschi Siena to a resounding 65-82 road win at Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday night. His 19 points and 11 rebounds off the bench – both season highs – also earned Hairston a well-deserved Sportingbet MVP award for Game 2 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Playoffs. The Euroleague rookie, who did not score more than 8 points in a game until the Top 16 finale, continued his good form with his third straight game scoring in double figures and his first double-double. Hairston made 7 of 9 two-pointers and 1 of 2 threes to go with 2 assists and 2 steals for a performance index rating of 32, which was the best by any player in Game 2 of the Playoffs on Thursday. Caja Laboral forward Fernando San Emeterio, this season’s performance index rating leader, had the second-best index rating of the night with 29 in a narrow loss to Maccabi Electra. San Emeterio scored 17 points on 4-of-7 shooting, went 7 for 7 from the free throw line and added 8 rebounds, an assist and a steal. The hero of Power Electronics Valencia’s win at Real Madrid, Omar Cook, had the third-best performance of the evening with a 25 index rating. Cook made 5 triples without a miss en route to 20 points plus 6 assists and a steal. Rounding out the list of Game 2 stars are Mirza Teletovic of Caja Laboral and Juan Carlos Navarro of Regal FC Barcelona. Teletovic scored 16 points on 3-of-5 two-point and three-point shooting and grabbed 8 rebounds for an index rating of 23. Navarro scored 19 points on 3-of-4 three-point shooting plus 6-of-7 free-throw shooting in addition to 3 assists and 8 fouls drawn for a 21 index in a losing effort against Panathinaikos.
Individual highs: Sofoklis Schortsanitis of Maccabi Electra, 22 points
Sofoklis Schortsanitis of Maccabi Electra poured in 22 points to lead all scorers in Game 2 of the Playoffs, bouncing back nicely after having matched his season-low with 4 points in Game 1. Dimitris Diamantidis of Panathinaikos is the Playoffs scoring leader with 21.5 points per game thus far. In addition to being Playoffs Game 2 MVP, Malik Hairston was also Thursday’s top rebounder with his 11-board haul. Game 1 MVP Richard Hendrix of Maccabi and Mirza Teletovic of Caja Laboral are tied with 9.5 rebounds per game as the leaders in the Playoffs. Real Madrid playmaker Pablo Prigioni and his Caja Laboral counterpart Marcelinho Huertas both dished 7 assists on Thursday, the most of the night. Omar Cook of Power Electronics is the Playoffs leader with an average of 7 assists per game. Three players – Nando De Colo of Power Electronics, Marko Jaric of Montepaschi Siena and Theodoros Papaloukas of Olympiacos – share the Game 2 high of 3 steals each. Jamon Gordon of Olympiacos is the Playoffs leading stealer with 2.5 per game. For the second straight game, Hendrix was the top shot-blocker, this time with 3 rejections. He is averaging 3.5 blocks in the Playoffs. Hairston was joined by Valencia forward Dusko Savanovic (14 points, 10 rebounds) as the only two players to tally double-doubles in Playoffs Game 2.
