Diamantidis sets one, ties with Pargo on another assists record
The two All-Euroleague point guards for the 2010-11 season, Dimitris Diamantidis of Panathinaikos and Jeremy Pargo of Maccabi Electra, etched their name into the Euroleague record books as the former’s team beat the latter’s in a thrilling 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four title game on Sunday. With 18 assists this weekend, Diamantidis set a new Euroleague standard for assists in the Final Four. At the same time, both he and Pargo tied the competition record for assists in the title game with 9.
The previous mark for assists in a single Final Four was 17, shared by Vasily Karasev of CSKA Moscow, who accomplished the feat in 1996 in Paris and Terrell McIntyre of Montepaschi Siena who tied his in 2008 in Madrid. Arriel McDonald, who ironically played with both Maccabi Tel Aviv and Panathinaikos in his career, had owned the title game assists mark with 9 dishes when he played for the former against the latter in the 2001 SuproLeague final in Paris.
