Spirou Basket makes Welsch first new signing
Jiri Welsch - Asefa Estudiantes (photo clubestudiantes.com)Belgian champ Spirou Basket Charleroi made Czech star Jiri Welsch the club’s first signing ahead of the 2011-12 season. Welsch (202, 31) agreed to a two-year deal with the club, which will try to duplicate last season’s success in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds. The veteran swingman arrives from Spanish side Asefa Estudiantes, for whom he averaged 5.2 points, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals in 14 Eurocup games last season. He also played in Spain the four seasons before that, all with Unicaja. Welsch helped Unicaja reach the 2007 Euroleague Final Four and twice reach the Spanish League semifinals. He grew up with Pardubice in the Czech Republic before moving to Sparta Prague in 1998 and two years later to Union Olimpija in Slovenia, where he made his Euroleague debut and emerged as one of the top prospects in Europe. Welsch has also played in the NBA with Golden State, Boston, Cleveland and Milwaukee.
