Montepaschi brings back Andersen
June 28, 2011
Montepaschi Siena upgraded its frontcourt in a big way Tuesday, by bringing back three-time Euroleague champion David Andersen, who helped the Italian champs reach a Final Four early last decade. Anderson (2.12 meters, 31 years old) was a key factor in 2004 when Siena mad its second Final Four, in Tel Aviv, and went on to win the Italian League title that season for the first time in its long history. That was Andersen’s only season in Siena until he signed a three-year deal Tuesday. Among the most accomplished players in Euroleague history, the Australian native is ranked third with 929 career rebounds and 13th with 1,894 points since 2000. Only Sarunas Jasikevicius (4) has more Euroleague titles among active players. Andersen spent the past two seasons overseas with Houston, Toronto and New Orleans of the NBA, where he averaged 4.9 points and 2.8 rebounds in 103 career games. The veteran center began his European career in 1999 when he signed with Virtus Bologna, with whom he won the 2001 Euroleague as well as the 2001 Italian championship and two Italian Cups during four seasons. His next stop was at Virtus Bologna before he moved to Siena for 2003-04, averaging 9.4 points and 4.3 rebounds in 20 minutes per game. He next headed to CSKA Moscow for four seasons, during which time he became one of the most consistent big men in the sport. With CSKA, Andersen racked up two more Euroleague titles, four Final Four appearances and four Russian League crowns. Andersen had his best season in 2004-05, when he recorded 12.4 points and 7 rebounds en route to All-Euroleague First Team honors. His most recent stop in Europe was with Regal F.C. Barcelona during the 2008-09 season, when he helped the club get to the Euroleague Final Four and win the Spanish League. Andersen has also enjoyed success as a member of the Australian national team, whom he has played for at the 2004 and ’08 Olympics and the 2010 FIBA World Championships and won gold medals at the 2005 and 2007 Oceania Championships.
