Galatasaray tabs leader in Lakovic
A former Euroleague champion and All-Euroleague guard has found a new home with the announcement Saturday that Galatasaray Cafe Crown has signed Jaka Lakovic to help lead its upcoming Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds effort. Lakovic (1.86 meters, 32 years old) arrives from Regal F.C. Barcelona of Spain as one of the most accomplished Euroleague players all century. He ranks second among all the competition's players since 2000 in games played (202), free throws made (628) and fouls drawn (848); fourth in three-pointers made (355); fifth in total points (2,369); sixth in assists (537) and eighth in steals (194). Last season, Lakovic put up 6.4 points and 1.9 assists on average in 15 minutes per game for Barcelona, with whom he won his Euroleague title the year before. Lakovic began his storied career in Geoplin Slovan of his native Slovenia, and made one of the splashiest debuts in Euroleague history with Novo Mesto in 2001-02, averaging 20.9 points, 3.8 assists and 2 steals while shooting great percentages across the board. His second Euroleague game, a shocking Novos Mesto road win at Real Madrid in which Lakovic scored 38 points, is still tied for the second-highest performance index rating, 55, recorded since 2000. From Novo Mesto, Lakovic joined Panathinaikos for four seasons, reaching his first Final Four and being voted to the All-Euroleague team in 2004-05. With Barcelona, starting in 2006-07, he reached two more Final Fours, culminating in his first title in Paris in 2010. Galatasaray and Lakovic agreed to a two-year contract, the club reported.
