2011-12 Qualifying Rounds Profile: PGE Turow Zgorzelec
2010-11 Results
Polish League:
Finalist
Polish Cup:
Quarterfinalist
Already the perennial challenger to the throne in Poland, PGE Turow looks to add another feather to its cap when it debuts in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds. Turow has been the most successful Polish club in the Eurocup and after reaching the Polish League finals last season, playing in the Euroleague is its newest goal. Founded in 1948, the club opened its basketball section in 1965 and won back-to-back Polish League titles in 1977 and 1978. Turow faded into obscurity for many years, however, playing in the Polish second and third divisions. The team won the Polish second division regular season in 2003 and was offered a wild card to the top league, but the club turned it down, preferring instead to gain promotion to the first division by earning it on court- which happened the following year. Turow shined in its Polish League return in 2004-05, finishing fourth at the end of the regular season and losing against eventual champ Prokom in the semifinals. Turow took a step forward in 2006-07 by signing head coach Saso Filipovski and Andres Rodriguez, Dragisa Drobnjak, Thomas Kelati and Lance Williams. Turow placed second at the end of the regular season and made it to the finals, but once again Prokom stood in Turow's way to success. In the summer of 2007, Filipovski added David Logan to the mix and found success on all fronts, winning seven straight ULEB Cup games at one point en route to the Final Eight before bowing out to Dynamo Moscow in the quarterfinals. Back home, Turow finished the regular season atop the standings, but lost its quest for the Polish championship in a seven-game finals series against Prokom. The club returned to the Polish League finals again in 2009 and 2011, but Prokom always had Turow’s number in the end. Last season the drama was greater than ever after Torey Thomas pushed Turow to a 3-2 series lead with Game 6 at home, but alas Prokom rallied to keep the title. Turow also reached the Eurocup again in 2009 and 2010, but did not get past the regular season.
Even though head coach Jacek Winnicki started training camp with a handful of last season’s stars returning, this year’s squad will have a new look. Point guard Ronald Moore could be one of Turow’s most important players as he looks to lead the attack. At his side will be former Euroleague champ Giedrus Gustas, veteran Artur Mielczarek, sharpshooter Michal Chylinski and the versatile David Jackson, who in his second season in Turow will be looked upon for scoring and defense. Turow is quite deep at the “4” and “5” positions. The well-travelled John Edwards teams with rookie Dallas Lauderdale to provide rebounding and shot-blocking from the center position. Konrad Wysocki and Daniel Kickert compliment them well at power forward, and newcomer Aaron Cel can help at either interior post. Veteran Michak Gabinski adds experience at small forward, rounding out an unheralded, but tough, deep and hungry squad that must be watched in the Qualifying Rounds and all season.
