Panathinaikos signs Smith at forward
Steven Smith (Photo: EWE Baskets)Defending Turkish Airlines Euroleague champion Panathinaikos added to its roster by signing forward Steven Smith, who will play for a third Greek club after previous stints with Kolossos Rhodes and Panellinios. Last season Smith (2.03 meters, 28 years old) played for Panellinios, for whom he averaged 13.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals in eight Eurocup games. His figures swelled to 16.7 points, 7.7 boards and 1.5 assists per game in the Greek League. Smith was with Panathinaikos on trial for the past two weeks before the sides formalized the contract. Smith played college basketball at La Salle University, where he was tice named the Atlantic 10 Conference player of the year. He logged 23 games with Philadelphia of the NBA in the 2006-07 campaign before coming to Europe for the first time with Seville in Spain. He has since suited up for NS Rieti in Italy, Kolossos Rhodes and Panellinios in Greece, Ironi Nahariya in Israel and EWE Baskets Oldenburg in Germany. Panathinaikos represents Smith’s first opportunity to play at Europe’s premier level, the Turkish Airlines Euroleague.
