German champion Brose Baskets Bamberg returns to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague this season as strong as ever. The club comes off a promising season in which it was involved in several down-to-the-wire thrillers and only narrowly missed advancing to the Top 16. With that experience in its back pocket, Bamberg decided to keep the core of that team in place and brings back nine players – including the entire starting lineup. Moreover, several of those players, like combo guard Anton Gavel, defensive stud TIbor Pleiss at center and sixth man Brian Roberts were Euroleague rookies last year and will have more to offer this time around. Brose Baskets complimented its potent lineup with electric scorer Julius Jenkins, savvy forward PJ Tucker and athletic big man Marcus Slaughter. Head coach Chris Fleming has the tools needed and the team surely has the confidence to break through to the Top 16 – and beyond – this season.

The Bamberg backcourt will not look the same as last season due to a knee injury that sidelined starting point guard John Goldsberry, but with three experienced guards that can distribute the ball as well as score, Bamberg has the tools to flourish. Gavel is cool, collected playmaker with leadership traits, a good handle and a strong outside shot. Among his most impressive abilities is being so involved on the offensive end without committing many turnovers. Jenkins is an explosive scorer who relies mostly on his shooting abilities, but can also get to the basket. Roberts uses a quick first step to get to the basket or to bring defenders to him so he can dish to the open man. He is also a Grade A defender. Karsten Tadda played limited, but consistent minutes off the bench last season. His outside shooting could ultimately lead to an increased role this year. Two more youngsters, Daniel Schmidt and Maurice Stuckey, add depth as they learn and await their turn to move up in the rotation. Team captain and small forward Casey Jacobsen rounds out the backcourt. With a picture-perfect jump shot and a basketball IQ that could land him as a coach one day, Jacobsen’s all-around game is an integral part of Bamberg’s success.

Predrag Suput is naturally a small forward, but in Bamberg’s small lineup, he battles bigger men at power forward. An ideal player to be alongside Jacobsen, Suput has the outside shot and court vision to make things happen from the perimeter as well as the technical abilities to work inside at both ends. Likewise Tucker is undersized at power forward, but has a fearless game that allows him to make noise in the paint both in terms of scoring and rebounding. Slaughter is among the most athletic big men in Europe. He has the shot-blocking and rebounding abilities to form a dynamic defensive duo alongside Pleiss or to hold the fort alone at center too. Pleiss was always an elite defensive prospect, but his scoring in Euroleague games almost tripled between his first four last season and his last four. If Pleiss proves himself to be a go-to scorer on the blocks, Bamberg will truly be a team to behold. Teenage center Philipp Neumann is a good prospect whom the staff in Bamberg hopes can follow in Pleiss’s footsteps.

The writing is on the walls this season in “Freak City.” Brose Baskets has continuity and experience, size and speed, versatility and smarts. Together with a fabulous home court advantage, this roster has the makeup to make noise and carry basketball in Bamberg to new heights along the way.
