Perennial Polish League champion Asseco Prokom Gdynia has become its country's flag-carrier in European club basketball. Prokom reached the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs in 2009-10, getting unprecedented results for a Polish team in the competition. After an underwhelming 2010-2011 Euroleague season, Prokom aims to bounce back with a radically changed backcourt and very interesting additions under the boards. The club deepened talent, range and athleticism by inking playmakers Oliver Lafayette and Jerel Blassingame, sharpshooter Devin Brown and physical small-forward Alonzo Gee. Prokom also bolstered its frontcourt with three-point threat Fedor Dmitriev and mobile big man Donatas Motiejunas, the 2010-11 Eurocup Rising Star, who returns to the Euroleague to showcase his talent. The backbone of the team’s roster, featuring Adam Hrycaniuk, Adam Lapeta, Lukasz Seweryn or Piotr Szczkota, is back to work for head coach Tomas Pacesas, already a legend in Polish basketball. Prokom is ready to battle for a Top 16 spot and if it reaches that goal, try to take it from there.
Prokom landed two fast, athletic point-guards in Lafayette and Blassingame. Lafayette is a hard-nosed defender who loves to drive to the basket and play with high intensity. Blassingame is a pass-first playmaker with unbelievable quickness. Always ready to deliver the key pass or hit the critical shot, Blassingame will surely surprise Euroleague fans with his aggressive play and driving skills. Brown arrives to Prokom ready to do what he does best –- fill the basket. Brown can create his own shot and never gives up on defense. His backup will be Michael Kuebler, a good three-point shooter ready to pull the trigger off the bench. Gee is an intriguing prospect at small forward, a great athlete with size, jumping ability and unselfishness. A good team defender, Gee can make the most out of his athleticism in a run-and-gun team like Prokom. Szczkota and streak shooter Przemyslaw Zamojski offer intensity and defense off the bench.
Motiejunas and Dmitriev give Prokom a lot of alternatives on offense. A good offensive rebounder, Motiejunas will be Prokom's main reference in the paint, with smooth post skills and a very effective mid-range shot. Dmitriev can not only open the floor with his wide-ranging outside shooting, but also adds an inside threat due to his post moves. On the boards, Prokom relies on Hrycaniuk, Lapeta and Motiejunas to battle for rebounds. Already a Euroleague veteran at age 23, Lapeta has the size, experience and timing to change games on defense and become a solid player in the competition. Hrycaniuk is a very aggressive center with strength, smarts and fighting spirit. Now in the prime of his career, Hrycaniuk once again brings his team-oriented game and hard-nosed attitude to Prokom this season. Versatile forward Przemyslaw Frasunkiewicz can hit the outside shot and always plays hard at both ends. Prokom is ready to take on the competition step by step, game by game, to try to reach the Top 16 by the end of 2011.
