Perennial Italian League champion Montepaschi Siena comes off a brilliant Turkish Airlines Euroleague campaign in which it overcame injuries and rallied to reach the Final Four and eventually claim third place. But never a team to rest on its laurels, head coach Simone Pianigiani has a fully reloaded squad with depth at every position that will be targeting nothing less than the club’s second consecutive trip to the Final Four and the fifth in the last nine years. Montepaschi boasts one of the best point guard duos in the Euroleague in Bo McCalebb and former Euroleague champion Nikos Zisis. And Siena is now stronger inside too after the additions of versatile center David Andersen, who is a three-time Euroleague champion, and promising rookie Dajuan Summers. With that duo alongside All-Euroleague big man Ksistof Lavrinovic, it’s clear that Montepaschi has as good an inside-outside combination as any team in the league and all the parts needed to be a serious contender once again.
Defensive aggressiveness has long been a trademark of Montepaschi Siena and this season again it starts at the point guard position with McCalebb. He already proved last year how important he is to the team before he went down with an injury in the middle of the season and now he is coming off a brilliant performance at EuroBasket 2011 where he led underdog FYR of Macedonia to the semifinals. His speed and ability to penetrate any defense is one of the crucial elements to Siena’s success. Zisis is also an important piece to the puzzle. The savvy playmaker compliments his teammates perfectly, can play either guard position and is a master of controlling the rhythm of the game. Rimantas Kaukenas, on the other hand, is one of the most reliable shooters in the game and capable of scoring in bunches when needed. Pietro Aradori will aim for an increased role off the bench where his instant offense can be a game changer. At small forward in his second Euroleague season, David Moss helps the team win with his all-around skills, whether scoring, setting picks or by playing tough physical defense. Another player with physical tools in this position is Summers, who is one of only two players joining Montepaschi this summer. With his strength, size and wingspan he is expected to create mismatches on offense. Meanwhile veteran Marco Carraretto is an experienced player who is a serious perimeter threat off the bench.
The deep front line is led by the duo of experienced power forwards, Lavrinovic and team captain Shaun Stonerook. In his fifth consecutive season with the team, Lavrinovic has an inside-outside game that stretches defenses. Stonerook is a key defensive player willing to do great amount of blue collar work away from the ball. The biggest addition to the team could be experienced big man Andersen. A former All-Euroleague First Team selection, he is back with the club seven years removed from when he helped Siena made its second Final Four and win the Italian League for the first time. However it is not only experience that the veteran brings. Andersen hurts opponents in the paint as well as with his steady jump shot, is also dangerous from behind the three-point line and is a very good passer. The front court is rounded out with forward Andrea Michelori, who is another physical presence in the paint, and center Tomas Ress who brings valuable size, experience and shooting ability off the bench.
Montepaschi now has even more options on offense than last season, which when paired with its traditionally stingy defense, allows head coach Pianigiani to try and build on last year’s success. No one can doubt Siena’s stars, who have all proven themselves at the highest levels with clubs and national teams. Their next goal is to come together in Istanbul and bring the Euroleague trophy back home to Siena.
