Week 6 bwin MVP: Fernando San Emeterio, Caja Laboral
All-Euroleague small forward Fernando San Emeterio erupted for one of the best games of his career Thursday to lead Caja Laboral to a crucial overtime victory over Fenerbahce Ulker and in the process earned Week 6 bwin MVP honors. San Emeterio scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed a season-high 8 rebounds to pace Laboral in the 90-85 win. With the pressure on and players tired after a grueling 40 minutes of regulation, San Emeterio rose to the occasion with a three-pointer and a floater in the lane early in the extra session that helped set the sides apart. When the final buzzer sounded, San Emeterio had made 5 of 8 two-pointers, 3 of 4 threes and remained perfect from the line for the season with 6 successful free throws. Combined with his 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 5 fouls drawn, San Emeterio tallied a performance index rating of 36, which was the second best of his career. This marks the fourth time San Emeterio has collected the Euroleague’s weekly MVP title. Though San Emeterio’s star shined brightest in Week 6, it was only one of many superb outings. The second-best index rating of the week belonged to Olympiacos guard Vassilis Spanoulis, who was the hero in the Reds’ 88-81 win over Gescrap Bilbao on Wednesday. Spanoulis scored 18 of his Euroleague career-high 29 points in the fourth quarter to lead Olympiacos. The former Final Four MVP made 6 of 8 two- and 2 of 4 three-point shots and nailed 11 of 12 free throws after drawing 10 fouls. Spanoulis also dished 10 assists for a career-best 34 index. Tied for third on the list of Week 6’s best are CSKA Moscow center Nenad Krstic and EA7 Emporio Armani Milano forward Danilo Gallinari, each with index ratings of 33. Krstic scored 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting and 7 of 9 free throws plus 7 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block in a 95-82 win over Zalgiris. Gallinari produced 24 points, 3 assists, 3 steals and 11 fouls drawn in an 85-76 loss at Maccabi Electra. Rounding out the list of Week 6 stars is Donatas Motiejunas of Asseco Prokom, who scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and amassed 3 steals and 4 blocks for a 30 index in a 78-76 overtime loss at Galatasaray Medical Park.
Individual highs: Serge Ibaka, 5 blocked shots
Spanoulis’s 29-point showing was the most points scored in Turkish Airlines Euroleague Week 6 and lifted him into first place on the season-long scoring charts with 21.3 points per game. KK Zagreb teammates Josh Heytvelt and Krunoslav Simon were the best rebounders in Week 6 with 12 boards apiece in an 86-74 win over Brose Baskets. Heytvelt is now tied for 10th place this season with 6.7 rebounds per game. The league leader remains injured CSKA forward Andrei Kirilenko with 9 per game. Zagreb newcomer T.J. Ford celebrated his Euroleague debut with 10 assists in only 13 minutes off the bench to lead all players this week. Sergio Rodriguez of Real Madrid and Marcelinho Huertas of FC Regal Barcelona are tied for the league lead with 6.2 assists per game this season. Fenerbahce sorward Thabo Sefolosha’s 5 steals were the most of any player in Week 6. With 2.3 steals per game, Sefolosha is second in the standings behind only Caja Laboral playmaker Pablo Prigioni with 2.5 per game. Madrid forward Serge Ibaka roared for a Week 6 best 5 rejections in the Whites’ 93-89 win over Belgacom Spirou. Ibaka is now second in the league with 2 blocks per game. Kirilenko holds the top spot with 3.2 per game. Six players registered double-doubles in Week 6 – including four from one game: KK Zagreb vs. Brose Baskets. Zagreb boasted the trio of Heytvelt (25 points, 12 rebounds), Simon (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Mario Kasun (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Brose Baskets had Marcus Slaughter (16 points, 10 rebounds). The other players were Motiejunas and Unics Kazan big man Vladimir Veremeenko (21 points, 10 rebounds).
