Zalgiris brings Salenga home
Zalgiris Kaunas has reinforced its team with a familiar face, small forward Dainius Salenga, who returns to the team after one year away. Salenga (1.97 meters, 34 years old) and Zalgiris agreed to a contract for the remainder of this season with an option for the 2012-13 campaign. This will be his 10th season with the club. Salenga arrives from fellow Lithuanian side Rudupis Prienu, for whom he averaged 12.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in six Eurocup games this season. He started last season with Zalgiris, but was suspended for doping after playing 10 Euroleague games. Salenga has appeared in 123 Euroleague games – all with Zalgiris – since he first joined the team in 2001. He started his career at Farmeka Vilnius and also played for Sakalai Vilnius before joining Zalgiris. Salenga later spent two seasons in Spain with Akasvayu Girona, with whom he won the 2007 FIBA EuroCup. Among his other career highlights are winning the Lithuanian championship five times and the Baltic League three times with Zalgiris. Salenga also won the 2003 European championship and played at the 2004 Olympic Games with the Lithuanian national team.
"In my heart, this is my team, so I accepted an invitation to come back," Salenga said. "I always wanted to finish my sporting career here, and not because of a doping scandal. I am very happy that once again it is possible for me to play basketball at the highest level, and for one of the most famous European clubs."
