Bennet Cantu brings Brunner to frontline
Bennet Cantu filled a hole in its frontline by signing power forward Greg Brunner for the remainder of the season. He steps into the shoes of Marko Scekic, who is sidelined with a knee injury. Brunner (2.01 meters, 28 years old) arrives from fellow Italian League side Fabi Shoes Montegranaro, for whom his last game came against Cantu on Wednesday. He tallied 7 points and 12 rebounds to help Montegranaro win. His season averages stood on 10.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, the latter of which was fifth best in the Italian League. Brunner is an experienced player in Europe, having also played for Benetton Treviso, which he helped to last season’s Eurocup Finals; Angelico Biella, which he helped reach the Italian League semifinals in 2009; and for Base Oostende and VOO Verviers-Pepinster in Belgium and Ironi Nahariya in Israel. Last season he was sixth in the Eurocup with 6.4 rebounds per game and posted a double-double in the competition’s third-place game against Cedevita. He made his Eurocup debut with Oostende, where he averaged 7.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in 11 ULEB Cup games in the 2007-08 season. He also helped Oostende to win the Belgian Cup that year. Brunner first made a name for himself during a four-year college basketball career at the University of Iowa. Brunner averaged 14.1 points and 9.2 rebounds in 34 NCAA games in his senior year at college, the 2005-06 season, helping Iowa to win the Big Ten title and getting selected for the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
