Top 16, Week 6 bwin MVP: Manuchar Markoishvili, Bennet Cantu
Manuchar Markoishvili - Bennet Cantubwin MVPBennet Cantu and Manuchar Markoishvili completed magical return seasons in the Euroleague this week. In their last games of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague season, Cantu beat Zalgiris on the road 71-77 and Markoishvili set career highs in performance index rating and points en route to Top 16, Week 6 bwin MVP honors. The swingman, who burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old rising star with Benetton Treviso, but had not played in Europe’s premier competition in the past four seasons, produced the finest game of his career Wednesday with 32 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. He made 5 of 10 three-pointers and was perfect from the foul line in 9 attempts in racking up an index rating of 35, which was not only the best of the week, but the third best of the Top 16 and tied for the eighth best this season. Markoishvili was not the only player to finish his season with a bang. Real Madrid big man Felipe Reyes tallied 17 points and 14 rebounds in a 90-102 road win at Montepaschi, though it wasn’t enough to catapult Los Blancos through to the playoffs. Nevertheless his index of 30 was second best this week and represented Reyes’s best Euroleague work in four years. Next on the week’s list of top performances is Maccabi Electra big man Richard Hendrix, who posted a Euroleague personal high with 24 points – including the first three-pointer of his career – in addition to 10 rebounds for a career-high index rating of 28. Rounding out the week’s elite performers were Vassilis Spanoulis of Olympiacos and Dusko Savanovic of Anadolu Efes. Spanoulis recorded 20 points, 8 assists and 4 steals for a 27 index in a playoffs-clinching win over GS Medical Park. Savanovic netted 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals for a 25 index on a loss to CSKA.

Individual highs: Felipe Reyes, 14 rebounds

Not surprisingly, Markoishvili was the week’s best scorer too. In fact, his 32 points are just 1 off the season-high in the league! Montepaschi guard Bo McCalebb walked away as the Top 16’s leading scorer after averaging 16.8 points per game. Reyes, the competition’s No. 6 all-time rebounder, was the weekly leader once more with his 14 boards. With 8.5 rebounds per game, Reyes finished the Top 16 second to only the all-time rebounding king Turkcan, who averaged 9.6 per game. The Top 16 assists crown went to EA7 Emporio Armani playmaker Omer Cook with 7 per game. Cook tied Spanoulis for the Top 16, Week 6 lead with 8 assists each. Maccabi wing Devin Smith’s 5 steals against FC Barcelona Regal were the most of the week and the most of the Top 16! Smith, with 1.5 steals per game, was the Top 16 runner-up to GS Medical Park’s Jamon Lucas, who averaged 2.5 steals per game. Veteran small forward Kelly McCarty rejected a career-high 4 shots in Top 16, Week 6 to lead all Euroleaguers. Hendrix and Gescrap BB big man D’Or Fischer shared the Top 16 block title with 2 per game each. Four players celebrated double doubles in the last games of the Top 16” Hendrix, Reyes, Luka Zoric (11 points, 11 rebounds) of Unicaja and Esteban Batista (10 points, 11 rebounds) of Efes.
