Playoffs series analysis: Panathinaikos vs. Maccabi Electra
Get ready for the newest chapter in one of the world's greatest basketball rivalries as last season's Euroleague finalists, champion Panathinaikos and runner-up Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, meet in a playoff for the first time. These teams have been crowned European champion in eight of the last 12 seasons. During that span, they have clashed in five Final Fours and three times in the title game. Panathinaikos takes a title defense into the playoffs for the first time. Maccabi, the only repeat Euroleague champion in the last two decades, will try to deny that honor to the Greens. Panathinaikos leads the 2011-12 Euroleague in steals (8.4 spg.) and all playoffs teams in offensive rebounding (11.6 orpg.), proving that Panathinaikos remains as intense and aggressive as ever. Maccabi leads all playoffs teams in two-pointers made (23 per game), but is last in three-pointers made (5.2 per night), which highlights how it runs its offense through its big men and slashers. The fact that most of the players players - not to mention both coaches, Zeljko Obradovic and David Blatt – remain with their respective teams adds even more excitement to the series. Maccabi has only lost once in front of its fans this season, but Panathinaikos has won five of its last six games outside Athens. In their 25 previous meetings, this rivalry couldn't be more even. Maccabi has won 13 games, Panathinaikos 12, including last season's Euroleague title game. Sit back and enjoy another classic!
