Playoffs, Game 1 bwin MVP: Dimitris Diamantidis, Panathinaikos
Dimitris Diamantidis was once again the star of the show Tuesday for the defending champs as Panathinaikos routed Maccabi Electra 93-73 in Game 1 of the teams’ best-of-five playoffs series. The reigning MVP got an extra treat for his brilliant performance in the playoffs Game 1 bwin MVP title. The Panathinaikos playmaker turned in 15 points on near-perfect shooting in addition to 8 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks to lead the Greens. His numbers added up to a season-high performance index rating of 31, which was best among all players on winning teams in the first games of the playoffs. In fact, the index is tied for the second-best of Diamantidis’s career and is his best outside of the regular season! Playoffs Game 1’s top performer was Montepaschi Siena’s hard luck big man David Andersen, who turned in his best game in over seven years, but saw his team lose at home to Olympiacos 75-82. Andersen scored 28 on 8-of-11 two-point and 2-of-3 three-point shooting and also grabbed 7 rebounds for an index rating of 33. Next on the list of playoffs stars was the hero of FC Barcelona Regal’s 78-66 victory over Unics Kazan, Pete Mickeal. The do-it-all small forward amassed 22 points of 4-of-4 three-point shooting in addition to 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals for an index rating of 25. Rounding out the best showing from Game 1 were Maccabi swingman Devin Smith and CSKA Moscow center nenad Krstic. Smith scored 17 and grabbed 6 rebounds for a 25 index. Krstic led CSKA to victory with 18 points on 7of-9 shooting for a 23 index.
Individual highs: David Andersen, Montepaschi - 23 points
Andersen, who came within 2 of his career high when he scored 28 on Wednesday, was the top scorer in Game 1 of the playoffs. He improved his average for the season to 11.5 points per game with that effort. Unics Kazan big man Vladimir Veremeenko was the best rebounder in Game 1 with 9 boards against Barcelona. With 6.3 rebounds per game, Veremeenko is on the verge of cracking the top 10 list for the full season. Marcelinho Huertas accrued a season high 10 assists in Barcelona’s big win and is now sixth in the Euroleague with 4.6 assists per game. Shaun Stonerook recorded a personal milestone with his 200th career steal as he collected 6 in Siena’s loss. He is also the all-time leader in average steals in the playoffs with 2.8 per game. Four players – Diamantidis, Joey Dorsey of Olympiacos and the Maccabi duo of Shawn James and Devin Smith – were tied for the Game 1 lead in blocks with 2 each. No player recorded a double-double in Game 1.
