CSKA wins VTB League crown
CSKA Moscow showed it is in tip-top for ahead of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four by downing Unics Kazan 74-62 in the VTB United League championship game on Thursday night at Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania. After Nathan Jawai made to a 2-point game with the first points of the fourth quarter, CSKA broke away with a 12-3 charge capped by a Nenad Krstic slam-and-foul to put the Muscovites ahead 65-54 with five minutes to go. Moments later Andrei Kirilenko nailed a three and Krstic added free throws to make it a 14-point lead, which allowed the CSKA faithful on hand to celebrate the win and title long before the final buzzer. CSKA opened the game on fire and led by Darjus Lavrinovic, raced out to an 11-1 lead. It was 22-15 after 10 minutes before Jawai and Lynn Greer led Kazan back within 40-37 at halftime. CSKA held onto the lead throughout a low scoring fourth-quarter before pulling away in the aforementioned fourth. Lavrinovic paced the winners with 15 points and 5 rebounds in 17 minutes, Ramunas Siskauskas added 12 points, Krstic 11 and Kirilenko tallied 9 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. Greer scored 14 and Jawai posted 13 points and 13 boards in defeat. Kirilenko was named tournament MVP and joined on the all-tournament team by Lavrinovic, Kazan’s Henry Domercant, Rod Blakney of Lokomotiv Kuban and Jonas Valanciunas of Lietuvos Rytas.
