CSKA re-signs team captain Khryapa
CSKA Moscow announced a new agreement with forward Viktor Khryapa, the team's captain, who signed a contract for two more seasons with an extra-year option to stay until the end of the 2014-15 season. Khryapa (2.03 meters, 29 years old) has just finished his seventh Euroleague season with CSKA, averaging 8.2 points on 41.4% three-point shooting, 4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 20 games this season.
"I believe that our cooperation has been successful for both the club and for me, so we decided to sign a new agreement," Khryapa said. "I am very pleased to be a part of CSKA's future. I think it is an honor that must be earned."
Khryapa helped CSKA win the Euroleague title in 2008, reach two other title games, in 2009 and 2012, and made it to three other Final Fours in 2003, 2004 and 2010. Khryapa has also helped CSKA to win the Russian League title in each of his seven seasons with the club, as well as to lift the Russian Cup trophy in 2010 and winning the VTB League this season. Khryapa was chosen by Euroleague head coaches as the winner of the Best Defender Trophy for 2009-10, when he also made the All-Euroleague First Team in voting by fans and media. A regular member of the Russian national team, Khryapa won EuroBasket 2007 and got a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2011. Khryapa has also played for Saratov in Russia, as well as for Portland and Chicago in the NBA.
"Over the years with us Victor has shown he is a real army man, a man of iron," CSKA president Andrey Vatutin said. "Without going into details, I can say that Victor had a difficult sickness just before the Euroleague Final Four, and the fact that he found the strength to play, and he played well, is not even a surprise. Once again, you can take your hat off to him, though, of course, I should also thank the doctors who did everything possible to help him recover. I am very pleased that we continue to work together."
