Efes brings back head coach Mahmuti
Oktay MahmutiAnadolu Efes Istanbul reached into its not-too-distant past on Sunday to name Oktay Mahmuti as the team's new head coach for the next two seasons. Mahmuti, 42, is a former Eurocup Coach of the Year who spent the largest part of his career for the same club he is now re-joining, Efes, where he replaces Ilias Zouros. Mahmuti joined the club as a youth coach in 1992 and working his way up until riding the bench as head coach for Efes for six seasons between 2001 and 2007. In his very first season, the club reached the SuproLeague Final Four, and twice after that came within a single victory - one shot in 2004 - of making the Euroleague Final Four. Mahmuti's record with Efes in the Euroleague was 55-28 between 2001-02 and 2007. He then joined Benetton Basket of Italy, taking the team to the Eurocup Finals in 2009 and being chosen that competition's coach of the year. He returned to Turkey to lead Galatasaray Medical Park in 2010. Last season, he and Galatasaray won their Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifications Round to reach the regular season and surprise everyone by advancing to the Top 16. In that round, Galatasaray finished tied for second place but lost its playoff spot in a tiebreaker to eventual champion Olympiacos Piraeus.
