Banvit BK lands Mejia
Sammy Mejia - CSKA MoscowBanvit BK brought in more fire power to try to get to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague through the Qualifying Round by inking scoring machine Sammy Mejia to a one-year deal, the club announced Saturday. Mejia (1.98 meters, 29 years old) arrives from CSKA Moscow, where he averaged 5 points in 6 Euroleague games last season. He helped CSKA to win the Russian League and the VTB League titles, as well as reaching the Euroleague final. Mejia had spent the previous two seasons with Cholet Basket in France, with whom he ranked seventh in the 2010-11 Turkish Airlines Euroleague in scoring with 15.1 points per game. Mejia was the Sportingbet MVP of regular season Week 5 last fall after scoring 29 points and posting a performance index rating of 35 in a home win over Fenerbahce Ulker. In his two seasons with Cholet, Mejia led the club to the 2010 French League championship and to the 2011 finals. He ranked fourth in the 2010-11 French League in scoring with 18 points per gamein addition to 5.1 rebounds and 4 assists. Banvit is Mejia's fifth team in as many countries since coming to Europe to play in 2007. He has also suited up for AEL Larissa in Greece and Pierrel Capo d'Orlando in Italy.
