Real Madrid extends head coach Laso
Pablo Laso - Real MadridTurkish Airlines Euroleague power Real Madrid reached a new agreement with head coach Pablo Laso to extend his contract until the end of the 2013-14 season, the club announced Monday. Laso, 44, arrived in the Spanish capital last summer and has pleased Madrid fans with his team's run-and-gun, fun-to-watch basketball, which led the Whites to a good season. Madrid lifted its first trophy in over four years, the Spanish King's Cup, and made it to the Spanish League finals, losing in a thrilling, five-game series against archrivals FC Barcelona Regal. Madrid also made it to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Top 16 but lost the chance to reach the playoffs on points differential. Madrid under Laso was the Euroleague's top-scoring team this season with 86 points per game, the fifth-highest average in the last 10 seasons.

Laso came to Madrid from another Spanish club, Lagun Aro, where he had coached the previous four seasons. He started with Lagun Aro in 2007-08 in the Spanish second division and managed to lead the team to promotion. Under his guidance, the team remained in the Spanish first division. He started his coaching career in 2003 with Leoni Castellona in the Spanish third division and one year later was in the first, coaching Pamesa Valencia, but left in mid-season. After that, he moved to Cantabria Lobos of the second division until he was signed by Lagun Aro in 2007. Laso was under contract for one more year, but the club has agreed to keep him for an extra season.

"I am very happy because this means that the club is very happy with the work we did. The agreement has been really fast because I feel really happy working here," Laso said Monday. "I feel very comfortable in Madrid and satisfied with the way my players worked, so reaching an agreement was a very simple thing to do."
